Some slack in the track is normal but make sure your track is not too loose to prevent ratcheting. This occurs when track drive lugs jump over sprocket rollers which damages the lugs and leads to track wear. If this happens frequently, it\u2019s probably best that the tracks are replaced. Not only is an overly-loose track not good for the proper running of your MTL but they can be quite dangerous for the person operating the equipment and put him or her in precarious situations.<\/p>\n<p>Also, just as your tracks should not be too loose, they also should not be too tight to reduce the possibility of unnecessary and avoidable damage to the tracks. In addition, over-tightening of tracks causes power loss by using up more power and fuel than is needed.<\/p>\n<h3>MTL with the right track tension<\/h3>\n<p>To determine whether or not you are operating your MTL with the right track tension, follow these steps recommended by CAT engineers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Place roughly 100 pounds on the track, between the front idler wheel and the drive sprocket.<\/li>\n<li>Then place a straight edge (like a rope or thick thread) across the idlers and sprocket.<\/li>\n<li>Measure the track sag between the straight edge and the top of the track. The sag should be about 12 mm for optimal performance. Adjust as needed to get the right track tension for your MTL.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are also instances when the guide\/drive lugs are completely ripped from the inside of the tracks which occurs because the inner sleeves located in the the drive wheel are not functioning properly or have been damaged. It is essential to check the roller sleeves and sprocket rings for wear regularly and to make sure that the sprocket sleeves roll freely in order to prevent premature damage to the tracks.<\/p>\n<h3>Replacing Rubber MTL Tracks<\/h3>\n<p>Before replacing your rubber track, inspect the inner and outer sleeves. If there is more than 3\/16\u201d of play in them and they do not spin freely, you should go ahead and replace them.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the proper functioning of undercarriage components and parts directly affect the work life of your rubber tracks. Make sure to check for uneven undercarriage wear. This is crucial because if some parts or components of the undercarriage are wearing faster than others, this can affect the efficiency and productivity of your MTL and causes tracks to wear and tear. This goes also for Compact Track Loaders (CTL) and other heavy, rubber-tracked machines and not just Multi Terrain Loaders.<\/p>\n<p>So that you can better comprehend how a malfunctioning undercarriage component directly affects track wear, let\u2019s examine it further by taking the example of an undercarriage\u2019s sprocket pitch. A new equipment may have a sprocket with a pitch of say, 86mm. After about 900-1000 hours of operation, the pitch can increase to about 93 or 95mm.<\/p>\n<p>If you decide to install a new rubber track with an 86 mm pitch, you are more than likely to hear popping sounds which is caused by the sprocket hitting the metallic part of the rubber. This causes the rubber to wear faster than it would have if the sprocket was operating at its optimal level.
